Best Battery Lawn Mowers: 5 Cordless Mowers Compared

Five current self-propelled mowers from EGO, RYOBI and DEWALT stand out for different buyers. The goal is not to crown one mower for everyone—it is to match deck size, runtime, drive system and battery platform to your lawn.

Selections are based on current manufacturer specifications, platform fit and intended use. Verify the exact model, included batteries and current seller terms before ordering.

Quick picks

The five mowers to compare first

No fake sale prices and no ranking based on a single voltage number. These picks fill different roles, from premium 21-inch mowing to smaller-lawn value.

023/4 ACRE CLASS
Best long-runtime value

RYOBI 40V HP RY40HPLM02K2

21" Multi-Blade Self-Propelled Mower

21 in.Up to 75 min.RYOBI 40V

A compelling option for larger residential lawns because the kit includes two 6Ah packs and RYOBI rates it for up to 3/4 acre under its stated conditions.

Watch for: Two large packs add system value but also weight and replacement cost; compare that with batteries you already own.

Best for DEWALT owners

DEWALT FLEXVOLT DCMWSP700Y2

60V MAX 21" RWD Self-Propelled Mower

21 in. steelUp to 85 min.60V MAX FLEXVOLT

The logical candidate for buyers already invested in FLEXVOLT who want a steel-deck mower with dual blades, rear-wheel drive and long manufacturer-claimed runtime.

Watch for: This is a serious kit. Its value is strongest when FLEXVOLT compatibility matters beyond mowing.

04600 SERIES
Best simpler EGO

EGO POWER+ LM2114SP

21" Self-Propelled Mower

21 in.Up to 50 min.56V ARC Lithium

A simpler route into EGO for buyers who want 21-inch self-propelled mowing without paying for the LM2156SP Select Cut XP feature set.

Watch for: The smaller included pack means less claimed runtime than the premium EGO pick, so lawn size matters.

051/2 ACRE CLASS
Best for smaller lawns

RYOBI 40V HP RY40HPLM07K

20" Self-Propelled Mower Kit

20 in.Up to 45 min.RYOBI 40V

A more compact RYOBI option for roughly half-acre-or-smaller use where one 6Ah battery and a 20-inch deck fit the workload better than a larger two-battery kit.

Watch for: If your normal mowing session pushes past the claimed runtime, budget for another compatible 40V pack.

Battery mower comparison

Runtime figures are manufacturer claims under stated test conditions. Tall, wet or dense grass, self-propel use, blade mode, slopes and temperature can reduce real-world runtime.

How we narrowed it

Five different reasons to buy

A mower can be excellent and still be wrong for your lawn. We separated the shortlist by use case instead of pretending every buyer needs the same machine.

01

EGO LM2156SP: premium all-around package

EGO pairs a 21-inch deck with its Select Cut multi-blade system, Touch Drive self-propel and a 10Ah 56V pack. EGO states up to 75 minutes of runtime and 8.3 ft-lbs of cutting torque. That combination makes it the strongest all-around candidate here when premium features and an outdoor-focused battery ecosystem both matter.

02

RYOBI RY40HPLM02K2: capacity for a bigger residential lawn

RYOBI includes two 40V 6Ah batteries and rates this 21-inch multi-blade mower for up to 75 minutes and up to 3/4 acre under its test conditions. The attraction is not just runtime: those batteries can also support a large RYOBI 40V outdoor lineup.

03

DEWALT DCMWSP700Y2: the FLEXVOLT loyalty play

DEWALT's 60V MAX mower uses a 21-inch steel deck, dual blades, rear-wheel drive and two included FLEXVOLT batteries. DEWALT states up to 85 minutes using both included batteries in succession. It is particularly interesting when the buyer already uses FLEXVOLT tools and wants those batteries to have value outside mowing season.

04

EGO LM2114SP: simpler entry to EGO

The LM2114SP keeps the 21-inch self-propelled format but steps down to a 6Ah battery and simpler dual-toggle drive system. EGO states up to 50 minutes of runtime. For a smaller lawn, paying for the LM2156SP's additional cutting and drive features may not be necessary.

05

RYOBI RY40HPLM07K: right-size the mower

RYOBI's 20-inch RY40HPLM07K uses one 6Ah 40V battery, rear-wheel self-propel and is rated for up to 45 minutes or about 1/2 acre under the manufacturer's conditions. A smaller deck and simpler battery plan can be a better fit when storage and lawn size do not justify a larger kit.

Buying framework

Choose the battery system before you obsess over peak specs

The mower is only part of the purchase. The batteries, charger and future tools determine how useful the system becomes after the first mowing season.

01

Lawn size

Use your normal mowing time—not only acreage. Slopes, obstacles, thick grass and bagging can make a small lawn more demanding than a larger open one.

02

Total battery capacity

A single large pack and two medium packs can create very different charging and weight tradeoffs. Compare the complete kit, not just voltage.

03

Drive system

Self-propel saves effort but consumes energy. Rear-wheel drive can help on uneven terrain; control feel matters as much as top speed.

04

Cutting system

Mulching quality, bagging suction, discharge behavior and blade configuration affect results more than marketing language about battery power.

05

Platform expansion

If the same packs can power a blower, trimmer, chainsaw or other equipment you actually need, the battery investment becomes easier to justify.

06

Service and storage

Check warranty, service path, blade availability and how the mower folds. Battery equipment still needs blades, cleaning and sensible battery storage.

Battery vs gas

When a battery mower makes sense

Battery is especially attractive when you value instant starting, lower routine maintenance, quieter operation and a platform that can power multiple yard tools.

  • Most or all mowing can be finished on the capacity you own.
  • You have practical charging access between mowing sessions.
  • You want to avoid gasoline storage and engine maintenance.
  • The battery platform has other outdoor tools you will actually use.

DON'T FORCE THE SWITCH

Gas can still be the practical answer

Long continuous mowing, remote properties, commercial duty cycles or a lawn that regularly exceeds your battery plan can make fast refueling more valuable than cordless convenience.

Run the ownership-cost numbers instead of assuming either power source is automatically cheaper.

FAQ

Battery lawn mower questions

How much battery runtime do I need for a lawn mower?

Start with the time your current mowing session actually takes, then leave margin for thicker grass, slopes, self-propel use and battery aging. A mower rated for exactly your best-day mowing time can feel undersized in tougher conditions.

Is a 56V mower automatically stronger than a 40V mower?

No. Voltage is one part of a system. Motor design, electronics, current delivery, blade system and total battery energy all affect performance. Compare the complete mower rather than ranking products by voltage alone.

Should I buy a mower in a battery platform I already own?

Usually that deserves serious weight because compatible packs may lower your effective cost and give you backup runtime. But compatibility should not override deck size, mowing performance, service support or other requirements that matter more for your lawn.

Do battery mower runtimes match manufacturer claims?

Manufacturer runtime is useful for comparison but is measured under particular test conditions. Real runtime changes with grass height and moisture, blade mode, self-propel use, terrain, temperature and battery condition.

What happens when a mower battery wears out?

Lithium-ion capacity declines with age and use. Check replacement-pack availability and cost before choosing a platform, especially when a mower depends on large-capacity batteries.
